The Most Guarded Habit in the Persian Kitchen

A lightweight cotton tee that treats saffron the way every Iranian household already does: as contraband. Two zip bags packed with red threads, a paper loaded end to end and half rolled, a brass mortar and pestle, a struck match still smoking — the whole kit laid out like something you would rather not explain at customs.

Anyone who has flown home with saffron tucked into a suitcase gets the joke. It is bought by the gram, hidden at the back of the cupboard, and ground with more ceremony than anything else in the kitchen.

The ceremony is real. Iran grows most of the world's saffron, largely in Khorasan, where each crocus gives just three red threads and every one is picked by hand. At home the threads go into the havan — a small brass mortar — with a pinch of sugar, are ground to powder, then bloomed in hot water until it turns deep amber.

The Design Vision

• The stash: Two zip bags crammed with saffron threads, drawn with the crinkle and shine of real plastic.
• The roll: A long paper laid flat and loaded with threads, one end already curled — the punchline at the centre of the shirt.
• The havan: A brass mortar and pestle engraved with leaves — the one tool in the picture that is exactly what it looks like.
• The matchbox: Framed in Persian miniature borders, with a saffron crocus on the label lounging back, heavy-lidded and entirely relaxed. A struck match leans beside it, trailing smoke.
• Front only: Full colour on the chest; the back stays plain. The Persian Essence label is printed inside the neck.
