Five Fingers Against the Evil Eye

A lightweight tee carrying the hamsa — the open hand with an eye at its centre — as a single detailed chest graphic in teal and gold.

It is a protective object rendered as ornament. The linework is fine enough to reward close inspection, but the shape reads instantly from across a room, which is roughly how a talisman is meant to work.

The name comes from khamsa, five, for the fingers. Across Iran, the Levant and North Africa the open palm has been used for centuries against the evil eye — cheshm-e zakhm, the wounding glance, the harm that envy is thought to do without meaning to. Persian households have their own defences against it: the blue nazar bead, and the burning of esfand seeds so the smoke passes over a person's head. The eye set into the palm is the same logic. It looks back.

The Design Vision

• The eye at the centre: A finely rendered iris anchoring the palm, drawn as the focal point everything else is arranged around.

• Teal against gold: A deep blue-green ground with gold filigree over it — the colour pairing of glazed tilework rather than of modern print.

• Symmetrical filigree: Floral linework built on strict bilateral symmetry, which is what gives an amulet its formal authority.

• Kept small: A single chest placement rather than a full front print. The object is meant to be worn, not displayed.

An open hand has always meant stop.
