Persian Pahlevan - Tee

Trained in the House of Strength

A lightweight cotton tee for the zurkhāneh — the House of Strength — and the athletes who have been swinging wooden clubs in one for the better part of a thousand years.

The artwork is done in warm ochres and aged timber tones, textured like a hand-painted wall in an old gym hall rather than a clean modern print.

The zurkhāneh is a domed pit, entered by a low door that forces everyone to bow on the way in. Inside, athletes move together to a drum played by the morshed, who also recites verse from the Shahnameh while they work. The meel — the heavy wooden club — is the signature implement. A pahlevān is not simply the strongest man in the room; the title is withheld until strength is matched by conduct. UNESCO listed the tradition as intangible cultural heritage in 2010.

The Design Vision

• The athlete: A single front placement carrying a bearded pahlevān mid-practice, drawn with the weight and stillness of a mural rather than the energy of a sports graphic.

• The meels in his hands: The wooden clubs are rendered with real grain and mass, heavy enough in the drawing that you can read the effort of holding them.

• Mural texture: Ochre, umber and worn timber, with visible grain in the artwork so it reads as painted onto plaster.

• No explanation offered: Nothing shouts. The design assumes the people it's for already know what a meel is.

The door is built low so that everyone bows.
