A Country Drawn Entirely From Ornament

A medium-weight cotton tee where the outline of Iran is filled not with terrain but with pattern — dense floral geometry running edge to edge inside the border.

The back carries the source: one large radial motif, the unit the front is built from. Read together, the two sides argue that the country and the ornament are the same material.

Persian radial design has its own name and its own logic. The shamseh — literally a sun — is the rosette that sits at the centre of illuminated manuscript pages and dome interiors, built from a fixed number of points radiating outward and repeating without deviation. It is geometry as devotion: the pattern is generated by rule, not by taste, which is why it holds together at any scale.

The Design Vision

• The map as a vessel: The national outline is used as a container rather than a symbol — the border holds the pattern in, and the pattern is what you actually look at.

• Density on the front: Fine floral linework packed tight across the whole silhouette, which is why it needs a smooth blank to hold detail without filling in.

• The rosette on the back: A single large radial motif, given the full width to open out into — the front's building block, shown whole.

• One design, two scales: Micro on the front, macro on the back. The same geometry read at two distances.

Zoom out far enough and the pattern becomes a country.
