A Peykan Sideways Past the Old Bridges

A lightweight tee putting Iran's most ordinary car in its least ordinary posture — a red Peykan Javanan mid-slide, smoke coming off the rears, against the arcades of Isfahan.

The composition sets one register against another on purpose: the architecture rendered still and monochrome, the car saturated and moving. Neither one wins.

The Peykan was built by Iran Khodro from 1967 to 2005, licensed from Britain's Rootes Group and mechanically a Hillman Hunter. Over nearly four decades it became the default vehicle of the country — the taxi, the family car, the first car, the one everyone learned to drive in and everyone's uncle could fix. The Javanan trim was aimed at younger buyers, and gojei — tomato red — is the colourway that stuck in the collective memory.

The Design Vision

• The gojei Javanan: The car sits front and centre in tomato red with wire-spoke wheels and a detailed chrome grille — specific enough that anyone who grew up around one will identify the trim.

• Isfahan, held still: The Safavid-era bridge arcades run behind in flat black and white. Draining the colour out of the architecture is what lets the car burn.

• Smoke as transition: The drift cloud sweeps across one side of the frame, carrying the eye from clean chassis lines into pure motion.

• Worn garage lettering: Heavy eroded type along the base, borrowed from the look of photocopied race flyers and oil-stained workshop signage.
