The Snake That Grew a Spider

A lightweight tee for one of the strangest animals on the Iranian plateau: the spider-tailed horned viper, which evolved a lure on the end of its own body and waits.

The illustration goes comic-book rather than field-guide — heavy line, high contrast, the horns pushed forward. It treats the animal as a character, which is roughly how it behaves.

Pseudocerastes urarachnoides lives in the western Zagros and was only formally described in 2006, having spent decades being mistaken for a viper with a tumour or a parasite on its tail. It isn't. The tail tip has evolved into a bulbous knob fringed with elongated scales, and the snake twitches it so that it moves like a spider. Birds come down for the spider. The rest follows.

The Design Vision

• The horns: The raised supraocular scales that give the species its name, drawn prominent and forward so the head reads as deliberate rather than incidental.

• The tail that lies: The spider-mimicking lure is rendered clearly enough to register as its own creature at a glance — which is exactly the trick the animal is running.

• Ambush typography: Lettering set to work with the coil rather than over it, carrying the "ambush master" line without crowding the illustration.

• Zagros palette: Rock and sand tones taken from the limestone country the species actually inhabits, not generic desert colour.
