A heavy cotton tee carrying a Qajar-era nobleman at his ease, painted in the moody oil tones the period is known for.
Nothing in the image is in a hurry. That is the whole proposition — a portrait of a man with the time to sit, and the standing that makes sitting a statement.
The Qajars ruled Iran from 1789 to 1925, and under Fath-Ali Shah the court produced one of the most immediately recognisable painting styles in Persian art: large dark eyes, joined brows, figures posed frontally and almost without motion, buried in pattern and jewellery. These portraits were never trying for likeness. They were arguing for presence.
The Design Vision
The seated khan: A single front placement carrying the full portrait — traditional dress, painterly brushwork, deep shadow. The palette stays in oil-painting territory rather than resolving into flat graphic colour.
The qalyan in his hand: The water pipe sits inside the composition rather than beside it, drawn with enough detail to register as the second subject of the portrait.
Painted, not printed: Visible brushwork and soft edges throughout, so the artwork reads as a canvas reproduced onto fabric instead of a graphic applied to it.
Some men are painted with swords. This one was painted with a pipe.
